Before you build to a higher standard you have to set a few

iPhone 5 set a precedent. Apple engineers and designers managed to compress first-of-their-kind technologies inside a space that’s a mere 7.6 millimeters thin and 112 grams light. A feat like that required designing or redesigning multiple components. And it resulted in an incredibly thin, impressively light, extraordinarily powerful smartphone. After coming so far with iPhone 5, it was a perfect place to start with iPhone 5s. And while the engineering challenge was significant, Apple succeeded in adding more to it without making iPhone 5s bigger or heavier.

 Multi-Terrain Monitor

This remarkable feature gives you a look at the front, side and rear areas of the vehicle from the comfort of the driver’s seat while off-roading. Shown on the 8-in. navigation screen, the images help you double-check your blind spots and examine your immediate surroundings for potential trouble.

 

Multi-Terrain Select

Multi-terrain Select ensures that the driver has the maximum amount of traction possible for any off-road scenario. The driver chooses from five available modes — Mud & Sand, Rock, Rock & Dirt, Loose Rock and Mogul — to best match the terrain being negotiated. The system optimizes throttle and brake control, helping to limit wheel spin and wheel lockup.

 

Multi-Terrain 4-Wheel ABS with EBD

ABS sensors detect wheel lockup during emergency braking situations, and the system helps compensate by “pulsing” individual wheel brakes. Land Cruiser’s ABS also features Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which redistributes brake force to help keep the rear wheels from locking up during sudden braking situations. By adapting to off-road conditions such as sand, gravel or mud, this standard Multi-terrain 4-wheel ABS is ideally suited for adventure.

 

Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS)

When driving at speed in a straight line, you don’t want the vehicle to change direction with every slight movement of the steering wheel. In town, however, when negotiating tight turns and when parking, you want the steering to be responsive. VGRS is designed to keep Land Cruiser’s steering relaxed at speed, and progressively more responsive as your speed drops.

 

Torsen®[2] Limited-Slip Differential

The Torsen,® or torque-sensing, differential is engineered to automatically send more torque to the wheel or axle with more traction, helping provide greater grip and better turning on uncertain surfaces.

4WD with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC)

The only thing better than the confidence of 4WD is 4WD with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and a Torsen®[1] locking center differential. By interpreting data from the ABS wheel-speed sensors, A-TRAC can tell if a drive wheel is turning faster than a non-drive wheel, which indicates loss of traction. The system can then automatically reduce engine power until the wheel that is slipping slows and regains traction. If reducing engine power isn’t enough, the braking system will gradually slow that wheel through pulsed brake action.

 

5-Speed Crawl Control (CRAWL)

Go where few other vehicles can. Crawl Control (CRAWL) helps control the throttle and brake in tough terrain allowing the driver to focus on steering, and with Off-road Turn Assist (OTA), negotiation of tight corners and off-road drivability are enhanced.

 

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)

Many traditional suspension systems perform well on the highway, but fall short when it comes to off-road performance. KDSS automatically optimizes suspension performance both on and off the pavement. On the road, it helps suppress body roll to enhance cornering performance. Off-road, it relaxes sway control on rough terrain for increased wheel articulation. This helps tires maintain contact with the ground on uneven terrain and minimizes body tilt.

 

Suspension

Land Cruiser is equipped with an independent double-wishbone suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar up front, and a 4-link rear with coil springs stabilizer bar and semi-floating axle in the rear. Trust worthy? You bet. Land Cruiser’s reputation is riding on it.

 

Skid Plates

Land Cruiser’s underside is equipped with reinforced skid plates to help protect the front suspension, radiator, fuel tank and transfer case.

 

Rigid Frame

Land Cruiser boasts the strength of body-on-frame construction. Using high-tensile steel, our engineers optimized the shape and thickness of the frame components to help increase joint strength and keep vehicle curb weight down. In addition, key suspension components have been optimized to enhance overall ride quality.

 

Stainless Steel Exhaust

In addition to being corrosion resistant, Land Cruiser’s exhaust system has been designed for performance. To help reduce back pressure, two independent exhaust tubes have been used to transport exhaust from either side of the V8 engine to the main muffler. Plus, the edges on the outer muffler casing have been removed to enhance uneven-terrain driving performance.

 

6-Speed Automatic

Land Cruiser’s automatic transmission not only offers the smooth shifting of six speeds, but also incorporates advanced features such as Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) sequential shift mode and uphill/ downhill shift logic.

With a 16-valve Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine that employs Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (V V T-i), Corolla offers grin-affixing acceleration. Yet it’s this same technology that also helps it achieve its great mpg. Add to that innovations like Electric Power Steering (EPS) to lessen Corolla’s engine load and an Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) to lend it precise acceleration, and it becomes clear that Corolla knows how to handle itself.

Engine Power

The 2013 Corolla is powered by an aluminum-alloy 1.8-liter 4-cylinder 16-valve engine. Incorporating lightweight pistons and a cooling water jacket spacer surrounding the cylinder walls, the design allows the engine to be lighter and more compact. Yet the engine still produces a spirited 132 hp and 128 lb.-ft. of torque. Its efficient operation comes courtesy of Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). VVT-i automatically adjusts valve timing across the engine’s full range of operation to maintain maximum power and achieve an EPA-estimated  27 city/34 highway mpg.
  

Refined Suspension

Corolla’s impeccable road manner begin with its rigid chassis. Built to resist body flex, it provides a reliable
platform so that the suspension can do its job. The front suspension, mounted to an additional sub-frame to reduce noise and vibration, is tuned for precision handling. In back, the rear suspension employs a torsion-type design that further smooths the ride quality.

Corolla’s Multi-Information Display (MID) keeps the driver informed. In addition to vehicle speed and  engine rpm gauges, the MID also provides outside temperature, current/average fuel economy, average speed and trip distance.
